Martial arts are a multifunctional complex phenomenon with an interesting history, thousands of years, with rich traditions and no less interesting present. A rapid development of different areas of combat systems suggests that their great future. And although there are now unlimited number of styles, trends, systems of martial arts, purposes, tasks, and their use can be divided into several types.

Traditional martial arts. Obviously, those species that have a pronounced national character, including folk and monastic schools. Competitive practices in such types has no rules, clear rules, making it difficult to sufficiently high level of competition. Traditional martial arts developed and practiced mainly among the common people in the form of fist fights and struggles. These types of martial arts include Russian fisticuffs, the Chinese Wushu Korean thekken, chharek, Vietnamese, and others.

Sports martial arts. This is an extremely competitive, competitive species that are international, Olympic sports. They are based on well-developed system of rules recognized all over the world, holding regular tournaments of different levels.
